Nineteen years old Prime League forward Afiq Tan first impressed Head Coach Patrick Vallée when he was included in the starting lineup against Johor Darul Takzim last week. Up against a team that had former Argentina international Luciano Figueroa, several Malaysian internationals and even our very own Hariss Harun, the young and lanky forward showed a maturity which belied that baby-face of his.

His willingness and ability to take on defenders excited all who were present and it was no surprise that Afiq made the starting line-up last night against the Young Lions. Again, Afiq did not disappoint and his presence upfront and his skill on the flanks very much helped his team, who were missing forwards like captain Ahmad Latiff, Asraf Rashid and Sebastien Etiemble.

The young lad came very, very close to capping his S.league debut with a goal as well but was denied by the toes of the Young Lions’ goalie.

“I feel really grateful for getting my first full game but I feel very disappointed for not scoring,” Afiq quipped. “I guess it’s just not my luck tonight and maybe I will get my chance next time.”
