Club

Founded in 1988 as Wellington Football Club by then R. Vengadasalam, the name was derived from the Deptford Ground located at Wellington Road in Sembawang where the team started playing football.

They won their first honours in 1991 by clinching the titles of both the Sembawang Group League and National Island-Wide League. They joined the National Football League Division Two in the following year and won promotion as division champions to Division One. They clinched the Division One title that season as well as finished as runners-up in the FA Cup.

In 1996, Wellington F.C. was selected to join the inaugural S.League and they adopted Woodlands Stadium as their home ground, prompting a name change to Woodlands Wellington Football Club. They finished runners-up in the 1996 Tiger Beer Series and achieved third place in 1997 and 2005 seasons.

Their only trophy came in 2007 when they won the inaugural League Cup by beating Sengkang Punggol 4-0 in the final.

Current team

Woodlands may not be enjoying the best of seasons but it has to be noted that the players in their squad are capable of spoiling anybody’s evenings. One glance and you will be able to identify many experienced players like Yazid Yasin, Walid Lounis, Shahril Alias, Moon Soon Ho and Atsushi Shimono in their team roster.

Two notable names in the squad which Jaguars faithful will be able to identify will probably be former skipper Walid Lounis who turned out for the Jaguars last season and 2011 youngster Patrick Paran.

Chang Jo Yoon is currently the Rams’ top scorer with 7 goals to his name in the S.League.

Head Coach

Appointed as head coach of Woodlands in 2013, Salim Moin led the northern outfit to a fifth place finish in the S.League at the end of the first two rounds, just above the Jaguars.

The 2013 Woodlands squad was the second highest scoring teams, albeit conceding more than they scored, with 45 goals scored and 47 conceded. Tampines Rovers were the only club which finished with more goals scored.

Salim left Woodlands for Tampines at the end of 2013 with AFC Cup ambitions but was relived of his duties after the club got eliminated from the regional tournament. Tampines Rovers did not manage to qualify for the knock-out stages of the 2014 AFC Cup.

After leaving Tampines in late April, Salim made his return to Woodlands where he tried to implement his attacking style of play. But the return has not been the sweetest as he has only recorded one competitive win in all competitions till date; a 1-0 win over Singapore Recreation Club in the Starhub League Cup.
