The first time the two sides met this season, Hougang came back from behind to beat the Jaguars 1-2 at Queenstown Stadium. It was the first win for the Cheetahs over the Jaguars since 2013, where Hougang experienced defeats over the two regular S.League fixtures.

The reverse S.League fixture was also the first of the two matches that was played in six days; the first being an S.League game and the second being the 2014 RHB Singapore Cup preliminary game. The game was a huge test for the Jaguars who had went into the fixture with two consecutive defeats to Home United and Harimau Muda.

Vallée also had not been able to field his full squad, as Prime League player M Arvin saw himself in the starting lineup again with Tengku Mushadad playing an unfamiliar role in centerback.

The Jaguars, however, took the lead in the 37th through a Kamel Ramdani freekick and could have held on to a valuable three points if not for a 84th minute strike from of all people, Lau Meng Meng.

The all important game five days later ended in a victory for the Jaguars and they went through to the 2014 RHB Singapore Cup quarter-finals.
