Tampines Rovers v. Tanjong Pagar United
20 September 2013
Jalan Besar Stadium
By Ong Jiing Yih
Not for the first time, Tanjong Pagar United face a true test of their abilities and spirit as they tackle a tough assignment of the last league match of the regular season.
Standing in their way of three more points is reigining league champions Tampines Rovers, who have yet again run clear of their pursuers at the top of the table.
Much has changed since the early years of the S.League where both teams had differing fortunes on the field.
While Tanjong Pagar were challenging for honours at the top end, Tampines had to endure years of underachievement by their own high standards.
The tables were slowly turned thereafter as the Stags began amassing trophy after trophy, in the shape of their Cup titles and four S.League championsips.
However, the class of 2013 for Tanjong Pagar have had a fruitful season by the virtue of their seasonal objectives.
From strugglers to success chasers, the Jaguars have dished out footballing lessons and gave many a sides a bloodied nose.
One such result was the first home win achieved on the back of a 1-0 victory against the Stags, the only goal scored by talismanic playmaker Kamel Ramdani.
Since then, pretty much has changed more than four months on.
While Tanjong Pagar bolstered their ranks with the addition of John Wilkinson, Tampines had plenty of personnel changes.
On the field, the Portugese trio of goalkeeper Andre Martins, midfielder Diego Caramelo and forward Vitor Ledeira were tasked to give their side a fresh outlook.
Despite some draws in games which they would feel they should have won plus Shaiful Esah's untimely absence, the Stags have managed to retain their shape and balance in the backline with Anaz Hadee and Ruzaini Zainal holding their own at both fullback positions.
Still, led by the capable and respected Patrick Vallee, Jalan Besar has been a relatively happy hunting ground for the Jaguars in a season full of testing circumstances.
A 100% winning record was only spoiled by the 'heroics' of DPMM FC during the 1-1 draw on July 12th.
Seeking to extend their unbeaten streak at the neutral venue, the Jaguars aim to finish as high as they can so as to set themselves nicely for a series of crunch games, both in the Singapore Cup and the final half round of the league.
Kickoff is at 7.30pm.
